Terrace houses to left of picture hint at the origins of an earlier Hobart, as an English colony. Perhaps building land was thought to be at a premium? On the slopes further away, most homes are built on separate allotments. Many homes in North Hobart top the 100 year mark, and some landmark buildings like Holy Trinity Church go back to the 1830's. There wasn't much architecture in Hobart then apart from pubs, churches and government buildings. Many of the really early homes simply didn't last that long.
